TOFEI Implementation

Building a Healthier Future Through Tobacco-Free Schools

Tobacco-Free Educational Institution (TOFEI) Implementation

By creating supportive ecosystems in schools, we nurture healthier learning environments and future-ready citizens.

The Foundation of Sustainable Health India (FSHI) is committed to fostering tobacco-free environments in educational institutions across the country. In alignment with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and in partnership with the Consortium for Tobacco-Free India (CFTFI), we are actively supporting the implementation of the Tobacco-Free Educational Institution (TOFEI) guidelines at the district level.

As part of this initiative, a District-Level Stakeholder Consultation on TOFEI was held on 26th June 2024 at the Zilla Panchayat Conference Hall in Chikkaballapur District. The consultation brought together key stakeholders from various departments, including Health, Education, and Panchayat & Rural Development. Officials from the District Administration, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), District Surveillance Officer, State Tobacco Control Cell, and Zilla Panchayat were present on the dais, highlighting the multi-sectoral collaboration essential for successful implementation.

The consultation saw active participation from Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs), Block Education Officers (BEOs), Block Resource Center (BRC), and Officials, and District Tobacco Control Cell Representatives. This wide representation ensures that the message of tobacco control reaches the grassroots level and is translated into concrete action within schools and communities.

To strengthen the implementation framework, a Master Trainers’ Training was conducted on 22nd September 2023. Around 60 participants, including school principals and senior officials from the Education Department, were trained to lead TOFEI implementation in their respective zones. The training sessions were enriched by expert facilitators from premier institutions:

  • Dr. Purushottam Chavan, Professor, Department of Head and Neck Oncology, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, led an insightful session on tobacco-related cancers, sharing frontline clinical insights on the health burden of tobacco use.
  • Dr. Anita R. Sagarkar, Associate Professor, Department of Public Health Dentistry, M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, conducted an interactive session on public health aspects of tobacco control, emphasizing preventive strategies and behavioral change in youth.
