Smokable tobacco products, including waterpipes, contain over 7000 chemicals, and about 250 chemicals known to be toxic or cause cancer according to World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/span><\/p>\n The tobacco free generation campaign promoted by WHO advocates legislations to preclude the sale and supply of tobacco to individuals born after a certain year. Most European nations are adopting these guidelines and the latest one is by New Zealand Government which has set 2025 as the deadline to adopt he same.<\/span><\/p>\n Why Tobacco Free Generation<\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n As the developed nations are putting in place safety nets to protect their young population, the tobacco companies are turning towards the developing nations.<\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n For years, tobacco industry has been targeting children through its aggressive marketing strategies. It is evident from the internal documents of population that how multinational tobacco companies design their products and promote their campaigning strategies to attract children as well as adults. \u00a0Millions of people are suffering from the poisonous effects of tobacco and many more have died due to tobacco attributable diseases. Following are the quotes taken from the industry\u2019s internal documents:<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHitting the youth can be more efficient even though the cost to reach them is higher, because they are willing to experiment, they have more influence over others in their age group than they will later in life, and they are far more loyal to their starting brand\u201d.<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cA cigarette for the beginner is a symbolic act. I am no longer my mother\u2019s child, I\u2019m tough\u2026 As the force from the psychological symbolism subsides, the pharmacological effect takes over to sustain the habit\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n In 2018, the major manufacturers spent 8.4 billion USD on cigarette advertisement and 62.2 million USD on point-of-sales materials.<\/span><\/p>\n result in increase in price which will\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>be<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0act as \u00a0<\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n deterrent to purchase of the product by our The first one was on \u2018livelihood verses life\u2019 The panel discussion was moderated by Mr. S J Chander, Secretary of CFTFK, Prof. Nayantara Nayak, Centre for Multi-Disciplinary Research, (CMDR) Dharward, Dr. Ranganath, consultant Pulmonologist of Narayana Health and Dr. I B Vijayalakshmi, vice present of CFTFK were the panellist. The other panel discussion on \u2018Role of Law in protection of children\u2019 was moderated by Mr. Shaikumar, General Secretary, Karnataka Associated Management pf Private School (KAMS) and an Executive Committee member of CFTFK. Over 250 students from arts and science colleges, health care training institutes and civil society organisation participated in the dialogue. Former chief Justice of India Shri M N Venkatachaliah was invited to deliver the inaugural address. Due to unfavourable health condition he could not make it, however he sent his written message through mail. Following is an essence of his message. \u201cDespite the compelling medical-data on the extremely deleterious effects of Tobacco Consumption on health and wellbeing of society, a cleverly contrived debate on the economic consequences of tobacco-farmers, Beedi - Workers and on the loss of revenue to the State is advanced.
